Harrisburg Academy Launches New Partnership with The Social Institute Educating Students and Families on Navigating Social Media and Technology

Plans Social Institute-led parental discussion on Sept. 18: Media Welcome

Harrisburg Academy (HA), the Capital Region’s premier, and one of the nation’s oldest, private, independent, co-ed, preschool-Grade 12 schools, puts students’ mental health and well-being at the forefront this academic year through a new educational partnership with The Social Institute (TSI), the leader in empowering students by understanding students. Through #WinAtSocial, their gamified, peer-to-peer learning platform, The Institute equips students, educators and families to navigate their social world – in the classroom and beyond, online and offline – in healthy, high-character ways.

The Academy has adopted The Social Institute’s learning platform and will integrate this curriculum in grades 3 through 12.

Caitlin Dallmeyer, director of Partnership Growth and Operations at The Social Institute, will lead a parental presentation and discussion on September 18 entitled, “How to Proactively Empower Your Child(ren) to Navigate Social Media and Technology.” The focus will be on setting family agreements and navigating hard conversations.

WHO: Harrisburg Academy leaders, faculty, parents

WHAT: Social Institute Parental Forum on Social Media

WHEN: Wednesday, September 18, 6PM

WHERE: Harrisburg Academy, McCormick Auditorium, 10 Erford Road, Wormleysburg, Pa.

“We believe it is imperative to address the serious risks to our students social and mental health posed by often unrestricted and imprudent technology use,” explained Sarah Oatney-Weiler, head of Early Childhood and Lower School at Harrisburg Academy. “We are committed to a three-pronged approach that we have developed to equip our community with the tools needed to responsibly navigate the digital world in healthy ways that promote well-being.”

Harrisburg Academy’s approach to this educational initiative includes starting a faculty and family book club with literary selections that explore the effects of technology on developing student minds and behaviors. The school will convene an Academy Community Book Club and discuss the first book at a meeting later this month. Throughout the year, The Social Institute educational platform will be integrated into the curriculum, with age-appropriate lessons and discussion prompts for students in elementary, middle and high school. The aim is to empower and equip students, not scare and restrict them.
